We’ve covered lots of repurposing and reuse projects involving speakers, but agree that “Hamburg’s Soundpauli company has [its] own quirky aesthetic.”
Designers Lin Nien-An and Cheng Ya-Fang have created the Green’s Voice system that turns empty plastic bottles into portable speakers. The package consists of a speaker driver with a custom designed rubber cradle that can be mounted to any used bottle. The bottle functions as an enclosure to amplify the sound.

Rebaroque’s Mikal Hameed and Rebecca Paul bring us soundscapes by way of vintage picture frames with speakers embedded into a canvas of sophisticated fabric. The speakers are designed to be connected to computers and portable music players or used as a dock. A great three-way between visual and aural art and sustainability.
The Pulpop MP3 speaker, designed by Balance Wu and Chin Yang, is made from recycled paper pulp.

iPhone speaker made from a vintage bicycle horn.
Fun fact: Do you remember this bike rack made from two shipping pallets? The person who made the bike rack also made the horn-speaker.

DIY project du jour: Turn jars into speakers
Sarah Pease, a furniture design student at the Rhode Island School of Design, made these super-cool “AudioJars.”
To make your own jar-speakers, you could use David Mellis’s open-source speaker information / tutorial, like Sarah did.

Justin Kim and Jinsop Lee are exhibiting at CES 2012 in Las Vegas this month with the hope to find technical backers to help launch his latest venture, the Dreyfuss Special. The Seoul-London design duo, who go under the name Uncle Oswald Is Our Hero, has developed an upcycled telephone that now works as a speaker.
Kim says that there is a drive to turn the idea into mass-recycled reality. He told PSFK: “Discarded electronics are piling up. We need to recycle them and use them in innovative ways”

A post on the Discard Studies site led me to Trash Amps, a small startup that “turns everyday objects into portable speakers for MP3 Players.”
The founders say: “We’re trying to get people thinking about new uses for things we normally throw away.” Sounds good!
Check out the video to see how they convert used aluminum cans into speakers — it’s pretty cool. There’s also a longer video in the Discard Studies post.
Andrej Čverha of Hangar Design Force finds a “novel use” for recycled paper, says PSFK: “Made up of recycled cardboard and paper finished in epoxy, his Tau speakers evoke an ‘exploratory exercise in finding the simplest shape to provide maximum audio fidelity.’”
The BoomCase, upcycled suitcase speakers.
Designer Mr. Simo puts a unique spin on the old school portable stereo by retrofitting vintage briefcases and suitcases with speaker systems. The end product not only makes a classy collectible, but also gives inspiration on how to creatively upcycle things found in the basement. –PSFK
