The Young Architects Program at MoMA invites emerging studios to propose a temporary installation that can host the summer events of the PS1 Contemporary Art Centre.
CODA's winning proposal, entitled Party Wall, is for a linear structure that will incorporate events spaces, seating areas, stages and projections areas, as well as pools of water that will function as “cooling stations”….
The interlocking cladding panels will be made from wooden offcuts donated by a skateboard manufacturer and some of them will be removable and used to build tables and benches.
"CODA’s proposal was selected because of its clever identification and use of locally available resources - the waste products of skateboard-making - to make an impactful and poetic architectural statement within MoMA PS1’s courtyard," said MoMA curator Pedro Gadanho.

Self-taught sculpture artist Haroshi is using the discarded leftovers of broken skateboards to create striking wooden creations.
The 35-year-old Tokyo resident, who prefers to not use his full name, began skating at age 15 in Kanagawa, amassing a growing stack of broken decks and parts. Ten years later, his collection overflowing, a friend suggested he find a way to do something with them. Cutting into one of the decks with a saw, he noticed an interesting pattern of stripes from its laminated layers of wood, and got to work on his first creation, a wooden bangle-style bracelet.
Since then, Haroshi’s sculptures have used the imagery of skateboard culture as inspiration for many of his pieces, utilizing multi-colored skateboard ply in both stacked layers and mosaic patterns. The output ranges from skateboarding cats to Airwalk sneakers. And, of course, skulls and demons.

We’ve highlighted Haroshi’s earlier work, here. But this piece above is too awesome to ignore!
And needless to say we’ve hit the recycled skateboard deck theme more than once, go here for more.

This one is made in my friends garden. It was her mom idea to make from skate swing.

I love this idea… great upcycling!

Always great to see new uses for old skateboards.

So, in this house in The Netherlands, a Jaguar, hung vertically, is used as a bookshelf/cabinet.
And skateboard decks serve as stairs, and teapots were made into a chandelier.
Um, wow.

"Haroshi makes his art pieces recycling old used skateboards. His creations are born through styles such as wooden mosaic, dots, and pixels; where each element, either cut out in different shapes or kept in their original form, are connected in different styles, and shaven into the form of the final art piece. Haroshi became infatuated with skateboarding in his early teens, and is still a passionate skater at present. He knows thoroughly all the parts of the skateboard deck, such as the shape, concave, truck, and wheels. He often feels attached to trucks with the shaft visible, goes around picking up and collecting broken skateboard parts, and feels reluctant to throw away crashed skateboards. It’s only natural that he began to make art pieces (i.e. recycling) by using skateboards.”
