365 Less Things →
It occurred to me on about the 3rd of January that I could turn a project I had already begun, which was to get rid of some un-utilised items in my house, into a 365 day resolution to declutter every wardrobe, bench, shelf, under bed, pantry and garage space in my home by giving away, throwing away or selling one item everyday for the next twelve months. Via Future Tense.

Here is a tutorial from Grathio labs, on how to make a book into a lamp of sorts. As always I have mixed feelings about treating books like raw material, but I suppose if you’ve got one you’re certain will be unread forever, this is better than throwing it out! Illumination is provided by an LED strip, switched on or off by a whisker switch that detects the position of the cover. ...

Wa$ted Bux →
Via cmonstah: Hey Y’all: A good friend has just started up a new Tumblr devoted to all the stupid shit people buy and NEVER use. I just ‘fessed up to a pair of never-worn, if aesthetically-pleasing shoes. She is looking for submissions, so send her examples of your poorly reasoned purchases here. Reblogging this — as a public service announcement. THINK before you buy, y’all.

“I wore a bright blue t-shirt and a vintage brown Katayone Adeli skirt, which...”
– What I Actually Wore | The Hairpin I love that question. When does an object you already own transition from merely “old” to the much sexier-sounding “vintage”? Suddenly I realize I own a lot of vintage clothing… maybe.

California e-waste law reaches a milestone: 1... →
The state’s electronic-waste recycling program has reached its 1 billionth pound of unwanted electronics. That’s more than any other state has recycled — and amounts to roughly 20 million TVs and computers kept out of landfills.

Twenty-year-old David Rocha dreams of one day becoming a professional violinist, but for now he plays for the community of Sao Miguel, a poor neighborhood outside Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paolo. The violin he uses is fashioned out of old wood that he found at a garbage dump. The drawers of an old closet are now being used to play symphonies by Bach and Beethoven. Rocha learned to make...
